Getting there from standard

This is standard tuning — nothing to change.

Why players use it

Standard tuning is a compromise, and a good one. Fourths between most strings keep scale shapes consistent, while the major third between G and B is what lets a hand reach common chord voicings at all.

What it buys you

Every chord chart, scale diagram and lesson you will ever find is written for it.
