Full-Step Down Tuning

Every string down a whole tone — the same guitar, a whole step heavier.

The strings

Low to high, the way you would say it out loud.

D6th
G5th
C4th
F3rd
A2nd
D1st

Getting there from standard

6 strings move; the rest stay where they are.

  1. 1st string — E down a whole step to D
  2. 2nd string — B down a whole step to A
  3. 3rd string — G down a whole step to F
  4. 4th string — D down a whole step to C
  5. 5th string — A down a whole step to G
  6. 6th string — E down a whole step to D

Why players use it

Like half-step down, only further. Shapes are untouched, the tension drops noticeably, and the guitar takes on real weight. Heavier strings are worth it here to keep the low end from flapping.

What it buys you

A much bigger low end with none of your muscle memory thrown away.
