The floor
Kick drum
The low voice that gives a groove its weight. Start by feeling where it lands before worrying about speed.
Lesson one · the kit
A drum kit is not one sound. It is a small conversation: low, high, sharp, open, and moving. Learn to hear each role before you try to play them all.
The floor
The low voice that gives a groove its weight. Start by feeling where it lands before worrying about speed.
The backbeat
The crack that answers the kick. In a basic rock groove it gives beats two and four their shape.
The clock
Two cymbals that keep the subdivisions visible. Closed hats are a great place to learn steady eighth notes.
The movement
Tuned drums that carry fills around the kit. They add direction when the groove needs to turn the corner.
The light
Crash marks an arrival; ride opens up the time. Use them as punctuation, not constant noise.
Try this
Open the groove builder, choose Rock, and follow the kick row. Add the snare on two and four. Then let the hi-hat fill in the spaces between. That is the skeleton of a beat you already know.
