Try the idea while it’s fresh

Look at standard tuning for a moment: E, A, D, G, B, E. The first four strings climb in perfect fourths — five frets apart each time. Then, between G and B, the pattern breaks: a major third, only four frets. Then back to a fourth for the last string. Why the wrinkle? Why not tune in all fourths, like a bass, or all fifths, like a violin?

The problem every tuning must solve

A tuning is a compromise between two jobs the guitar has to do at once. Melody wants wide range: the further apart the strings, the more notes you can reach without moving your hand. Harmony wants reachable chords: the closer the strings, the easier it is to stack notes into shapes one hand can actually hold. All fifths (like a violin) maximizes range but makes most chords physically impossible on six strings. All fourths keeps scales tidy but pushes common chord shapes into awkward stretches.

Standard tuning splits the difference with surgical precision. The fourths on the bottom give scales and riffs a consistent geography — the same fingering pattern works as you cross the low strings. The single major third between G and B compresses the top of the range just enough that a hand can wrap around full six-string chords. That one “broken” interval is what makes an open E major, a barre chord, and a first-position C possible at all.

A shape problem, not a sound problem

Here is the deeper insight: the guitar is tuned for the hand, not the ear. A piano lays out pitch logically and demands ten fingers. The guitar lays out pitch *ergonomically* and asks four fingers to do the work. Chords that span three octaves on paper collapse into a two-fret-wide grip. The cost is that the B string breaks your patterns — every scale shape, every octave shape, every interval shape shifts by one fret when it crosses from the G string to the B string.

Take this with you

When learning shapes, treat the B string as a rule, not an exception: anything crossing onto the B or high E string moves up one fret. Internalize that once and the whole fretboard becomes one repeating pattern.

Five centuries of pressure-testing

The tuning was not designed — it evolved. Renaissance lutes and early guitars experimented with many intervals, and the ancestors of E-A-D-G-B-E won for the same reason river stones are smooth: everything impractical got worn away. By the time the six-string guitar stabilized around 1800, this tuning had already outcompeted its rivals in the only test that matters — centuries of real hands playing real music.

And yet it is not sacred. Drop D trades a low E for a heavier root and one-finger power chords. Open G removes the puzzle entirely for slide players. DADGAD blurs major and minor for Celtic drones. Every alternate tuning is a different answer to the same range-versus-reachability question — which is exactly why exploring them teaches you so much about the standard one.
