Music theory names the distance between two notes an interval, which makes it sound like a measurement problem. Count the letter names, look up the number, add a quality, move on. That is the paperwork. The useful thing is that an interval is the smallest piece of musical meaning: every melody is a chain of intervals, every chord is a stack of them, and every emotion you recognise in music comes partly from how those distances behave.

You already know intervals by feel. A song that jumps up like a fanfare, a melody that sighs down by one step, the open sound of an octave, the alarm-bell tension of a tritone — your ear hears the relationship before it knows the label. Theory gives that relationship a name so you can find it, repeat it, and use it on purpose.

The number is the size of the gap

Interval numbers count letter names, including both notes. C up to D is a 2nd: C-D. C up to E is a 3rd: C-D-E. C up to F is a 4th, C to G a 5th, C to A a 6th, C to B a 7th, and C up to the next C an octave. The number describes the span on the staff; it does not yet tell you the exact number of semitones.

  • ·Unison — the same note, zero semitones apart.
  • ·2nd — a step-sized interval, either minor or major.
  • ·3rd — the interval that gives a triad its major or minor character.
  • ·4th and 5th — strong, open-sounding intervals that anchor harmony.
  • ·6th and 7th — wider melodic intervals with major and minor forms.
  • ·Octave — twelve semitones, the same note name at a different height.

This is why C to E♭ and C to E are both 3rds even though they sound different. The letter span is the same; the chromatic distance changes. The second part of the name — minor, major, perfect, augmented, or diminished — tells you exactly how wide it is.

Semitones are the ruler; quality is the spelling

On a piano, semitones are the smallest available steps: C to C♯, E to F, and so on. Semitones are excellent for checking your answer, but they are not the whole identity of an interval. C to E♭ is three semitones and C to D♯ is also three semitones, yet they are not spelled the same way. One is a minor 3rd; the other is an augmented 2nd. Equal temperament makes them sound the same on a piano, but the spelling tells you how the notes function in the key and how a musician should read them.

Take this with you

Name the letters first, then count semitones to choose the quality. If you start with the keyboard distance alone, enharmonic spellings will eventually make your theory contradict your music.

The perfect family is made of unisons, 4ths, 5ths, and octaves. The major/minor family is made of 2nds, 3rds, 6ths, and 7ths. Raise a perfect interval by one semitone and it becomes augmented; lower it by one and it becomes diminished. Raise a minor interval and it becomes major; lower a minor interval and it becomes diminished.

Why some intervals feel stable and others do not

Consonance and dissonance are not a simple good-versus-bad scale. They describe how strongly two notes seem to blend or rub against each other, and the answer changes with register, volume, tuning, context, and musical culture. Still, there is a useful physical reason for the broad pattern: simple frequency ratios line up their overtones more often, while complicated ratios create more beating and roughness.

  • ·The octave is 2:1, so the upper note fits neatly inside the lower note’s harmonic series.
  • ·The perfect 5th is 3:2, almost as clean and stable — the reason it is the structural beam of so much harmony.
  • ·The major 3rd is 5:4, which is more colourful but still settled enough to define a chord.
  • ·The tritone sits six semitones wide, exactly between the octave. Its symmetry removes a single obvious direction, which is why it can sound suspended until it resolves.

Context changes everything. A minor 2nd can sound like an error when held against a chord, or like an expressive ornament when it slides into a destination note. A perfect 4th is open above the root but can become tense against a bass note. An interval is not an emotion by itself; it is a relationship waiting for a musical job.

Intervals are the hidden structure of chords

A major triad is a major 3rd with a minor 3rd stacked above it: C to E, then E to G. A minor triad reverses the order: minor 3rd, then major 3rd. That one change is the difference between the two chord qualities. Add another minor 3rd and you get a diminished triad; add a major 3rd after the minor one and you get an augmented triad.

This is also why the third matters so much. The root tells you where the chord is built, the fifth reinforces its stability, but the third tells your ear whether the sound is major or minor. Remove the third and a power chord becomes deliberately ambiguous — not major, not minor, just root and fifth with the decision postponed.

How to train your ear without memorising a song list

The classic advice is to associate every interval with the first two notes of a famous song. That can work, but it often turns into a trivia test: you remember the song, not the distance. A stronger method is to make the interval resolve so your ear learns its behaviour.

  • ·Start with a unison, octave, perfect 5th, and perfect 4th. They are wide, distinctive, and easy to compare.
  • ·Add the major and minor 3rd as a pair. Play the same root, then switch only the third and listen for the colour change.
  • ·Practise ascending and descending separately. Your brain does not automatically treat the same interval in both directions as the same sound.
  • ·Sing the target before checking it on your instrument. The moment between your prediction and the answer is where the ear gets stronger.
  • ·Use intervals inside melodies, not only as isolated jumps. Ask what the note is doing: arriving, leaning, opening, or falling away.

Do not chase speed first. Five accurate interval comparisons with a clear prediction will build more hearing than fifty guesses made too quickly.
